Los Angeles – “Made in L.A.” on view at UCLA Hammer Museum

Made in LA is a biennial worth mentioning. Not only due to it’s ground-breaking selection of artists – it features more female than male artists! Given the statistic that more women than men go to art school and become artists, it makes sense. But also as ¾ of the artists exhibited are under 45. Most have not had solos shows in L.A., those who have were predominantly exhibited in smaller or alternative venues. It is a survey of what’s hot on L.A.’s emerging art scene.

The exhibition is curated by Hammer Museum’s chief curator Connie Butler and the independent curator Michael Ned Holte, who slammed the the previous inaugural 2012 biennial in Artforum. Although the premise of the show, young and unestablished artists, sounds like a hit or miss there is a chance that it is an indicator of what is trending or what might come in terms of art production in L.A.

After reading the laudatory review published in the LA Times I have high hopes. In any case as the visit is free the only money you will have to spend is on gas.
