A Breath of Fresh Art: Friends of Nicolas Unites Healing and Creativity at Berntson Bhattacharjee Gallery

When curator Anna Mikaela Ekstrand extended an invitation to the Friends of Nicolas charity event at Berntson Bhattacharjee Gallery in London, I was not sure what to expect. It sounded more like a wellness event than a traditional luncheon fundraiser. What unfolded, however, was a glimpse into the charity’s mission to support hospitalized children and their families through holistic retreats.
Friends of Nicolas founded in 2023 by Anna Carolina Hahn to support the mental health of hospitalized children and their families, organizes restorative retreats that go far beyond conventional care. These immersive programs incorporate nutritious meals, breathwork, and therapeutic activities designed to support emotional resilience and physical well-being.

Hosted at Berntson Bhattacharjee Gallery, the morning was set against the backdrop of Metanoia a solo show of William Farr’s most recent work, inspired by the Rothko Chapel. The gallery’s director, India Bhattacharjee, shared that Farr’s personal journey—from addiction to sobriety—has profoundly shaped his work. Now living a monk-like existence, Farr uses his art to explore the healing potential of light and color theory, a resonant environment for the morning’s program.
Guests were greeted by breathwork instructor Isobel Hyde, who opened the session with a smudging ritual intended to clear negative energy. The breathwork session began with open dancing to ease the group into comfort and connection, followed by a grounding circle where each person shared a word describing their current state. Participants then transitioned into a guided breathwork session, accompanied by rhythmic drumming and uplifting music. The experience, described by many as deeply meditative and challenging, invited guests to explore the therapeutic power of intentional breathing. The practice concluded with gentle nose breathing leaving attendees feeling clear, calm, and recharged.

The morning closed with a beautifully styled brunch provided by the team behind Farm Girl. Though the founder could not attend (she’s expecting a baby any day), her thoughtful hospitality was felt throughout. As we gathered around the table, we learned the deeply personal origin story of Friends of Nicolas; Anna Carolina founded the charity as a wedding gift to her husband, who lost his brother Nicolas during childhood.
This unforgettable morning was a celebration of creativity, compassion, and community—offering a glimpse into the impactful work Friends of Nicolas continues to do. This event exemplified the intersection of art and wellness, highlighting the transformative power of creative expression in healing contexts.
