Sophie M Home’s Managing Director Sophie Mir talks to Cultbytes about relocating to New York, admiration of Lionel Richie, and a new project in Montauk.

Furnishing exceptional in comfort, style and price to create timeless and classic interiors that reflect her clients’ lifestyle and personality lies at the heart of interior designer Sophie Mir’s practice. She wittingly refers to a home as a best friend, something you long to get back to and be with. Mir’s ability to seamlessly mix European Classic, Modern Classic, and Contemporary Design to find the balance between old, new and sentimental has made her one of the most sought after interior designers in Dubai and it’s surroundings.  Her success can be tracked through many prominent design magazines that have featured her interiors: Harper’s Bazaar, Emirates Home, Inspired Living, Ahlan and Al Bayan – to name a few.

Sophie M Home set up shop in New York in January, with offices in Union Square. New York will be the perfect place for Sophie Mir, who is the epitome of international with a large splash of glamour and clear business savvy, to thrive.

After fifteen years in the furniture retail industry, in leading positions such as Director for Indigo Living; Head of Buying and Design at Q Home Décor in Dubai; Interior Design and Decoration Manager at Svenskt Tenn in Stockholm Mir founded Sophie M Home. She was educated in Art & Design at Stockholm University and is of Swedish-Iranian descent. Despite Mir’s scintillating personality and inviting demeanor when I ask about her most opulent interiors her eyes sparkle but bound by her ethical principles of confidentiality she discloses no further information. Gossip is a no no. Since 2012 she has together with her team created dramatic and inviting interiors for palaces, hotels, restaurants, penthouses and villas throughout Asia and the Middle East.

I met with Sophie Mir and asked about what is to come:

What do you predict to be a big trend in
interior design in 2015?

Blue tones and symmetrical and asymmetrical patterns on textile-clad furniture, wallpaper and accessories are all the rage. Used in the right way these details can bring a lovely whimsical and playful touch to an interior. Mixing antique, retro and new is also becoming more popular, something that I have been doing for years. It helps create a feeling of familiarity, alongside comfort and style these are the foundations of a perfect home.

Which is your favorite interior decorating fair
and why?

I love Maison Objet held in January in Paris. Hands down it is a great start to the new year, the perfect place to scout new trends and meet with suppliers and other industry professionals – old and new friends. Later this month I will be travelling to Singapore Furniture Fair, an excellent fair for acquisitions. I plan to take a day or two off to re-charge in warmer weather. March will be a busy month for Sophie M Home!

If you could pick a dream client, dead or alive to furnish their home – who would it be and why?

Lionel Richie! For as long as I can remember I have listened to his music. I admire his big heart and great sense of humor; I have had the pleasure to meet him at several occasions. Fingers crossed that he will reach out next time he is remodeling or needs design counsel!

Can you let us in on a secret…?

Is this a trick question? Actually let me tell you about our latest project; a hotel and restaurant at the easternmost end of Long Island in Montauk. It is an absolute thrill to work in an iconic place with such rich history. Tudor Revival architecture from the 1920’s mingle with remnants from its heydays as a fishing town. Despite the many fashion-forward boutiques and hotels Montauk has a relaxed feeling, perhaps due to it being an east-coast surfer’s paradise. I am looking forward to modifying the architecture and creating interiors that reflect these aspects in combination with the unique personality of our client. I will leave you wanting more, come out and see the results this summer!

Sophie M Home handles smaller and larger projects for businesses and private persons in New York and farther afield.
